U.S. Customs Bonded Warehouse

Contact

Lutheran Brothers operates its U.S. Customs bonded warehouse (H739) within the Port of Detroit. Using a U.S. Customs bonded warehouse can be advantageous for importers and exporters.

What is a Customs bonded warehouse?

A Customs bonded warehouse is a building or other secured area in which imported dutiable merchandise may be stored, manipulated or undergo manufacturing operations without payment of duty for up to 5 years from the date of importation. The Customs duties on these goods are due only at the time the merchandise is moved out of the warehouse for consumption in the U.S. If the merchandise is shipped out of the warehouse to a foreign country, no U.S. duty is charged.

Advantages

  • No customs duty or excise tax, if applicable, is paid on goods in a Customs bonded warehouse until they are shipped out of the warehouse for consumption in the U.S.
  • Goods may be exported from a zone free of duty and tax.

  • Duty is not due/collected until the merchandise is withdrawn for consumption in the U.S. An importer, therefore, can better utilize those funds for normal operational costs.
